Welding duplex stainless steel

10 July 2020 @ 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm

Once again SWS is collaborating with Nickel Institute to bring to webinar on Welding Duplex Stainless Steel for the benefit of our members.

Duplex stainless steels were discovered within the first decades of the stainless steel era but did not become more widely accepted until the Argon Oxygen Decarburisation (AOD) production techniques of the 1970s allowed good control of gases and impurities in the melt.  The advantages of higher strength compared to austenitic and the lower nickel content especially compared to the austenitic with higher corrosion resistance meant that it was primarily adopted in the chemical and oil and gas industries. Many different duplex alloys have been designed ranging from lean, low alloy, standard, super and hyper but all with the ferritic/austenitic microstructure, good strength and weldability although different from austenitic.

This webinar includes consideration of:

  • ·       How duplexes are different from other stainless steel families in both properties and weldability
  • ·       The specifics and development of the 5 duplex groupings and current testing standards
  • ·       Specification of welding duplex and its effect
  • Heat input, cooling rate, interpass temperature, heat treatment
  • Shielding gases and consumable and their effects
  • Ferrite/austenite ration and its measurement
  • Welding processes and their limitations
  • ·       Outline of dissimilar metal welding and the IIW graph
  • Post weld repassivation

 Presenter:

Dr Graham Sussex, Technical specialist and Nickel Institute consultant.  Graham is a material expert with over 30 years experience and more than 600 technical publications to his name. Stainless steel is his speciality.
